Riders - Post 1
Fall is upon us and the riding is wonderful again! The Legion Riders have been very busy since the last printing of this paper. From planning events to helping out on events around the community, we have kept on the go.In April many of us worked on the Legion Event trailer preparing it to be revamped & repainted. In May we attended and assisted at the Memorial Day Ceremonies at Memorial Park & Floral Haven. We made a ride up to the Nursing Home to visit our adopted Veterans & take them some small gifts of appreciation. A website was built for the Riders to keep everyone updated and to bring in more membership.
We began the plans for the 4th of July with our car and motorcycle show and the Woody Brown Poker Run in September. We attended a Welcome Home for a wounded warrior at Post 308. And sadly many of us attended the final missions of Sugar Winters & Wanda McGhee. In June we assisted with the Legion Event trailer at Haikey Creek for Armed Forces day. Elections for our new officers were held and we have a great group leading us. Our soldiers’ families kept us informed of their loved ones activities, three were headed over to the Ghan and one is on his way out soon. Two are home safe and getting back in the swing of daily work on their bases.
July came and we were ready for the events on 4th of July was a success with 6 bikes and 2 cars, plus our vendor, at our car and motorcycle show. We had enlisted a band, brought out the fire truck for all to enjoy and had many donated items. Thanks goes to Blue Bell Ice Cream for the scoops for our root beer floats that many enjoyed on the hot day and to Bad Neighbours for the music! We also manned the Event trailer where we sold hot dogs and Frito pies along with water and soda. We voted in our first Legion Rider Support member, Ms. RAT and she accepted. We had a nice ride with friends to Qualls, Okla. where we ate a great meal at Jincy’s. Decision was made to forego our $5 Fridays and instill large dinners in the Main Hall with our first one to be in October. The remainder will be January 20th, March 16th and May 18th. In August we held our meeting poolside at the Lakey’s. We had a great meeting and fellowship with our returning members, RC and Maxine Mackey. We voted in two more Legion Riders Support members, Bill and Amanda Leach. We held our Ride Director in prayers for his upcoming surgery. With September coming upon us the Woody Brown Run was coming together nicely. We took a pre-ride of the route on Labor Day. We had a great turnout with approximately 160 bikes. It was a bittersweet day for many as we all thought of Sugar and spoke of him throughout the day. We appreciated the help of the Auxiliary, without them the Run would not have been as smooth. They ran the silent auction and took care of the kitchen for us. We in turn assisted them with the Gold Star Family Dinner. The men manned the kitchen and helped with cleanup afterwards while the women auxiliary/riders bussed the tables. We held our meeting and voted to adopt two soldiers serving overseas who have not received anything. October started great with many of us taking a ride out to Bikes, Blues and BBQ in Fayetteville. We have plans for our own Fall Costume Dinner-Oct. 21st which we are combining with the Auxiliary’s Trunk or Treat. The children will have a great time and the families will have a great dinner. We have started plans for our 2nd Annual Turkey Run as well. Our Christmas will be going back to our Nursing Home to spend time with our adopted Veterans. If you ride and are a member of the Legion we meet the last Tuesday of the month at 7pm in the Shields Room unless noted. Until next time May You Remember the Fallen, Thank the Serving and Bless those who have served.
